APPEARANCE
From the bright neon colour contacts and dreads, to the piercings decorating his face and the tattoos that seem to sprout from every inch of skin, it's clear that VoXXX (pronounced Vox-Triple-X) is always ready to make an impression as the frontman/face of the musical project SCHAULUST. A visage that is forever changing and forever customisable.
Big platform boots, massive spikes and fuzzy leg-warmers are a MUST no matter how impractical they seem. As hypnotic as it is to witness his performance, it's hard not to feel a sense of anxiety waiting for an accident as he thrashes about on stage. But that's what he loves so much.
Body modification is an extension of his transition, if you can customise your gender, why not go the whole way?
OVERVIEW
VoXXX is the powerhouse of SCHAULUST in tandem with his partner and bandmate Vigil, where he provides the harsh lyrics and vocals. A prolific and simultaneous MC, go-go dancer and vocalist means he's also the one responsible for the chaotic and dramatic performances the duo are known for. For VoXXX, music is a vehicle to express himself, fuelled by the feelings of gender dysphoria, injustice and queer expression no matter how depraved it might be. Fluent in industrial dance, it's also rumoured that neon and glowstick fluid is coursing through his veins.
His history in underground, legally questionable raves across the entirety of the UK, spanning genres such as happy hardcore, trance, techno, EBM and aggrotech has created a unique blend with his queer identity and Jamaican heritage that he's proud to call his own.
VoXXX is not heard publicly without his digitised and distorted vocals, and as such not much is known to the public about his private life or his dynamic with Vigil beyond the odd e-mail interview exchange for a probably soon defunct fan website, and whatever you might see on stage.
Behind the stage persona, Vox (also his name post-transition) is a sensitive and somewhat silly and reckless person with a deep passion for DIY, fashion and body modification. He works rather boring day jobs to pay the bills, which he balances paying for alongside a forever emptied tattoo fund. He's fluent in English, Jamaican Patois and German and uses them all in his daily life and music. He speaks Japanese to the best of his ability with Vigil.
HISTORY
Vox was born in the late 1970s, [XXX], Jamaica and immigrated with his parents to [XXX], England before he was a teenager. Growing up he was wholly misunderstood by those around him, both in part to his immigrant background and emerging queer identity and the friction between him and his deeply religious parents. It led him to seek refuge in art, music and dance, which further led him down the path into both rave and goth culture in the 1980s and 90s, where he would cross paths with Vigil for the first time at a dingy and cramped goth club in London.
Through the UV lights and smoke machine at Vigil's set, their energy synchronised. Vox followed Vigil through the rest of her sets and travels during her short residency in the UK, before spontaneously following her back to Germany, where they would found SCHAULUST together in the late 1990s. They bonded quickly with thanks to their similar ideology to creating art and music, massive interest in the emerging aggrotech scene and being two of the few visibly and openly transgender people.
SCHAULUST released a few odd singles before their first independent album release "MASTEKTOMIE" (mastectomy) in 2001, to moderate success within the scene, playing mostly club concerts and small festivals around Germany. Their next album "DIE SUENDEN DES FLEISCHES" (The Sins of the Flesh) released in 2003 and would become their most successful album, allowing the duo to tour Europe together. Following a few more releases, they would grow older and out of their musical styles, but still remain as a couple and perform as SCHAULUST when the mood feels right.
